Wilderness Trek: 2021 Walk the Path Booklet

Wilderness Trek is a faith-based organization that helps teens, young adults, and families grow, through a wide variety of experiences in outdoor settings in Northern New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Texas. They offer group and individual treks, where participants will hike, climb, repel, camp, and raft their way across backcountry wilderness, summiting mountains and reconnecting with God and nature.

In 2021, the Wilderness Trek director hired me to create a companion booklet for each participant. The theme of 2021 was “Walk the Path”. The content was curated and written by the director and other staff members at Wilderness Trek, and it was my task to design it. Once I sorted and interpreted all the content, I laid it out into a 96-page booklet.

Table of contents

The book is comprised of 4 sections: Things to Know, Daily Study/Solo Time, Resources for the Journey, and a Journal. Each day of the trek, participants are given dedicated time to spend (in the wilderness) in quiet contemplation and reading with this booklet full of quotes, prompts, scriptures, thoughts, and more. In addition to the final Journal section, there are blank spots and pages wound through the Daily Solo Time for ample journaling.

Section 1

The first section, Things to Know, is a great primer. It contains useful information like the mission of the organization, it’s history, the expectations of people on the trail, and an introduction to the gospels.

Section 2

The second section, Daily Study/Solo Time, is full of quotes, scriptures, mini-lessons and other thought-provoking prompts – as well as space for writing – for each day of the six days of the hike (first two days shown here).

Section 3

The third section, Resources for the Journey, is full of additional reading materials, thoughts on important questions about spirituality and prayer, scripture about nature, recommended books for further reading, and more.

Section 4

The fourth section, Journal, is just that – several pages of blank space, devoted to give participants a place to record any thoughts or revelations they may experience throughout the trip.

Full Booklet

To keep production costs low, I used only black and 1 spot color in Wilderness Trek’s brand orange. To establish a hierarchy to better communicate the information and provide a continuity across categories, I used a series of typefaces: Bell MT for the body copy, and a fun stylized family for the rest – The Stranger (Inline, Slim, Wide, Script).

On the cover, I created illustrations based on the trekking areas (New Mexico, Utah, Colorado), and incorporated them into the booklet as well. I also used the same illustrations to design one of the t-shirts for Wilderness Trek’s gift shop.
