Sarpino’s Pizzeria is a pizza franchise with locations across the United States. While at Fire Engine Design Studio, I had the opportunity to design a new menu that would go out as a mailer to the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, and also to Lawrence, KS (location of Kansas University).
The menu would be a trifold brochure style, and feature only items carried by all the locations. Sarpino’s intended to send out this menu quarterly, so I designed the cover to be easily replaced without changing the rest of the menu, using it to feature a pizza item and a non-pizza item that would be replaced for each mailer.

I used colors and typefaces from the branding already established, adding one typeface for the headers and illustrating little callout graphics – the chicken, car, meatball, vegetarian, and spicy icons. I tried to keep the clean and playful aesthetic, with bright pops of color to add excitement without interfering with readability. I chose photography of finished products and fresh ingredients to communicate freshness and show the appeal of delicious food, increasing the consumer’s appetite.

In addition to the readability of the fonts and the layout, there were a few things about designing a tri-fold brochure that took special attention. While designing, I tried to be cautious of extending type across the folds and margins, doing so only sparingly, so as not to interfere with readability. After researching the correct size and placement, I included an intentional blank panel for the mailing address and postal indicia in the design.
